Musicity
Bustling Market Beats

We invited seven musical artists from here and far to record and reinterpret the sounds of Bangkok landmarks into original compositions ahead of Wonderfruit in 2019. Just like the other locations touched by the Musicity project, Bangkok was treated to a suite of new perspectives and unexpected soundscapes from a global cast of creators.

Five artists in attendance were representing Erased Tapes Records—Hatis Noit, Douglas Dare, Midori Hirano, Rival Consoles, and Daniel Brandt.

The latter, Germany’s Daniel Brandt, was taken to Tha Tian Market to capture sounds and create a sonic picture of the location. The final port of call for goods arriving in the capital for centuries, Tha Tian Market is as famous as it is bustling. Between the ferry terminal and the smattering of souvenir stores, Tha Tian is mostly viewed as ground zero for tourists in the royal quarter of Bangkok’s old town. But behind the façade lies an active market overflowing with produce, wholesalers, and trolleys laden with everything an inner city wet market needs.

“The experience in the market was completely different than normal, because I couldn’t control anything and I just had to see what happens. I played a lot of materials with my drumstick so I had some kind of certain rhythmic elements that I could use, but I also used a lot of other things—like something falling down—and kind of created a rhythm out of everything.”
