Seven musical artists were enlisted to record the sounds of Bangkok old town’s most iconic landmarks, and turn the field recordings into stems and samples for original compositions. That’s the format for Musicity, and the way it was handled when Wonderfruit invited Musicity and Erased Tapes to the city ahead of Wonderfruit 2019.
Seven locations were selected, and each was given to an artist to record. One location was significantly more sensitive than others: Bangkok’s Democracy Monument. Given the nature of the location and the meaning of the monument, Thailand’s own Nannue Tipitier stepped up to represent the sounds of the space with a sympathetic ear to its (sometimes stormy) history.
The site of celebrations as often as protests, the Democracy Monument is a symbol of Thailand’s political landscape that remains as relevant today as it was when it was constructed in 1940. For Thais on every side of the political spectrum, Democracy Monument is ground zero for fairness, representation, and—ultimately—democracy.
“Since Musicity is all about celebrating the beauty of architecture and structure, I’ve chosen Democracy Monument because it stands out, it’s majestic, and it is relevant to our history as Thais.”
