There’s edible arrangements, and then there’s this.
This organic, green #ObjectsOfWonder comes from The Fields, prepared at our onsite farm for a recent gathering of conscientious friends who came together to get their hands dirty. In an afternoon of food, music, and connection to the land, a small group discovered all the ways that The Fields have been creating life in the absence of Wonderfruit.
As with most Objects of Wonder, this collection of plants is simple. On the surface, it’s just a centrepiece. A small basket is filled with a nitrogen-rich mix of compost, soil, and Nespresso coffee grounds, sprinkled with microgreen seeds gathered from the farm, and left to sprout. It’s nice to look at, and it’s edible too. The basket takes pride of place on the table, surrounded by plates of creative fare prepared from produce grown in the same soil.
Which is what makes this arrangement one of wonder. As guests attending the recent Rice & Roast event with Nespresso in The Fields sat down to a meal prepared by chef Num of Samuay & Sons, they were faced with a very clear and direct reminder of where their food comes from. Not only because they were sitting in the midst of the onsite farm, surrounded by rows of fresh vegetables, in the shade of the mushroom hut. But because directly in front of each diner sat a distilled microcosm of what the farm is all about: natural, circular farming practices in service of the earth.
While The Fields have overgrown in solitude, untouched by Team Wonderfruit or the Wonderers, new life has been allowed to spring forth and create an entirely new purpose for the land best known for hosting Wonderfruit. While we all wait to gather again, the farm has expanded, the workers who call The Fields home have been able to create new sources of food and income, and thanks to the support of Nespresso who have been supplying rich coffee ground fertilizer, our natural environment has begun to transform into a productive place for produce, experimentation, and growth.
We’ve asked artists, designers, creators, and creatives to share images of objects that spark wonder—artworks, tools, heirlooms, and oddities that carry meaning and tell a story. Individuals from all over the Wonderfruit universe have supplied storied items for our new feature: #ObjectsOfWonder.
